Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a monomeric intermediate filament protein found in the astroglial cytoskeleton and is not found outside the CNS. This protein is not routinely secreted in blood and is only released after cell death or injury. These characteristics suggest that GFAP may be an ideal marker for TBI.27 It is released after CNS damage and may serve as a marker of TBI.
