美国病理学家协会（College of American Pathologists，CAP）是美国一个非赢利的临床实验室认可机构，它依据美国临床检验标准化委员会（CLSI）的业务标准和操作指南，以及1988年的美国临床实验室改进规范（CLIA’88），对临床实验室各个学科的所有方面均制定了详细的检查单，通过严格要求来确保实验室符合质量标准，从而改进实验室的实际工作。CAP致力于临床试验室步骤的标准化和改进；倡导高质量和经济有效的医疗保健服务，其所产生的影响超过了其他任何一个组织，因此被国际公认为是实验室质量保证的领导者和权威性的实验室管理和认证组织。
CAP认证，是美国病理家协会举办的一种国际论证。自1962年起在美国普遍采用执行，1994年起被世界各国公认为最适合医疗检验室使用的国际级实验室标准，通过CAP认证的检验室代表其检验室品质达到世界顶尖水准，并获得国际间各相关机构认同。
1．CAP认可的检查内容：CAP认可的检查过程有3个基本文件，即实验室认可标准、检查细则和检查员的总结报告(inspectors summation report，ISR)。CAP的实验室认可计划检查实验室检验前、检验中和检验后涉及质量管理的各方面，包括质量控制、试验方法和性能特征、试剂、质控物、设备、样本处理、结果报告、内部性能评估和外部能力验证、人员能力要求、安全、文件管理、计算机服务和信息系统管理等。
2．实验室认可标准：标准是认可决策的基础，CAP的认可计划分别有相应的标准，涉及4个方面。标准I与人员资质、责任和主任的作用有关；标准Ⅱ是有关实验室的物理设施和生物安全，包括空间、仪器设备、家具、联络工具、实验室空气流通、公共用具和安全设施等；标准Ⅲ围绕着质量，包括质量控制、能力验证(PT)、仪器维护、质量管理和性能改进等；标准IV是检查的要求，包括外部组织的现场检查和内部的自我检查。
3．实验室认可检查清单(checklist)：(1)认可检查清单内容：认可检查清单是认可标准的细化，以问题的形式表示，约有3 000多条问题，它覆盖了认可标准的方方面面，是实践标准的指南。CAP的实验室认可计划提供了以下检查清单：实验室一般要求，是对整个实验室和各专业的基本要求，包括：能力验证、质量管理、质量控制、标本和报告、对实验用水和玻璃器皿洗涤的要求、方法性能验证、人员要求、实验室计算机和信息系统的功能和安全的各项要求、实验室安全、实验室环境设施。除此之外，对不同的专业还有针对性的要求和检查清单，包括解剖病理、化学和毒物学、细胞遗传学、细胞病理学、流式细胞术、血液学和凝血、组织相容、免疫学和梅毒血清学、有限的实验室服务、微生物学、分子病理学、POCT、输血学、尿夜分析和临床镜检、法医尿液药物试验、生殖实验室等的检查清单。不同的专业，有些认可检查清单的内容可能相同。可通过CAP网站(WWW．cap．org)下载最新的LAP标准、检查清单等电子文档。(2)认可检查清单的用途：每条清单问题有一个唯一的编号。有三种不同的回答供选择：“Yes”指实验室完全符合该条要求；“No”指实验室不能满足该要求；“N/A”指该问题此时不涉及。缺陷分两个层面：层面I的缺陷对患者和员工安全无严重影响，实验室只需将整改方案以书面形式报告给CAP，不需提交支持性文档；但层面Ⅱ的缺陷则可能对服务质量、患者和员工安全有严重影响，实验室不仅必须提交整改计划，且需提供整改行动和效果的支持性文档。根据认可检查清单，申请实验室明确应该如何准备才能满足标准要求，检查员也明确应该如何对实验室进行检查，因此，便于理解和操作。
The College of American Pathologists ("CAP"), is a medical society serving more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world.
It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of pathologists certified by the American Board of Pathology[1], and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care. It is also affiliated with the American Medical Association (AMA).[2] CAP does accreditation of laboratories under deemed authority by CMS (Medicare). It also offers an accreditation service to help laboratories earn accreditation under ISO 15189 Medical Laboratories. In November 2008, Piedmont Medical Laboratory of Winchester, Virginia became the first laboratory in the United States [3] to be officially accredited under ISO 15189.
Pathologists play an integral role in the primary health care team. They are physicians who obtain and interpret data as the result of examination of tissues, blood, and other body fluids for diagnosis and patient care. CAP members are involved in a broad range of disciplines, including surgical pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, forensic pathology, blood banking/ transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunopathology, hematology, genetics, and molecular pathology.
