3D THICKNESS MAPPING
Using a needle probe under the load cell, it is also possible to map the surface profile and the thickness of a layer of material over a stiffer substrate (e.g. the cartilage layer over a bone). This is done using the “Scan XY” and the “Find Contact” functions. The “Find Contact” function moves the needle at a constant rate until it penetrates the upper material (e.g. cartilage) surface and stops when the transition to the stiffer material (e.g. bone) is detected. The difference between the vertical position of the surface (position where the load starts to increase) and the vertical position of the interface (first inflection point in the displacement/force curve) provides the vertical thickness. The thickness distribution can be calculated using the surface orientation previously obtained using the “Normal Indentation” function in the Mach-1 Motion software.
