TT-AFM Stage

This is the stage that is used in the TT-AFM product. When purchased as a stand-alone product the stage includes*:

• Light lever force sensor • Manual X-Y stage • 50 micron piezo scanner • Motorized Z stage • Support structure • Covers • Modes input output connector *Not included: video optical microscope

The piezo scanner has motion sensors in the X and Y axis to assure accurate scanning. Industry standard micromachined probes are rapidly inserted into the light lever force sensor with the probe holder. The range of the Z stage used for probe approach is 1” and the step size of the motor is .4 microns. At the rear of the stage is the socket for a 60-pin ribbon cable that is used to provide power and I/O signals to the stage.

    Video Microscope – Included with the video microscope is an illumination source, stand, 3 megapixel CCD camera and visualization software. The resolution of the video microscope is 1.5 microns and it has a working distance of 115 mm.

The video microscope includes the following items:

 

• 3MP CCD camera with USB interface • Zoom tube with zoom ratio of 0.7 to 4.5 X • LCD illumination source with adjustable voltage power supply • Image view and capture software • Microscope stand with height adjustment mechanism

The video microscope is optimized for use with the TT-AFM. The working distance permits movement of the LL-AFM over its complete range without having to adjust the video microscope's height. The illumination source provides an even illumination of a samples surface, giving very clear images of the AFM probe and a sample's surface.

The video microscope software is MS Windows-based and includes several important functions, including image monitor, movie capture and image capture. The software is run concurrently with the LabView software used to control the TT-AFM. Images captured by the video software are stored in a .jpg format.

    50 Micron AFM Scanner – Samples are held in place on this scanner with a removable cap. This modified tripod scanner utilizes low voltage piezoelectric ceramics and temperature compensated strain gauges. Connections to the scanner are made with a 20-pin ribbon cable.

 

50 Micron AFM Scanner

The 50 micron X-Y scanner is designed specifically for the TT-AFM product. It utilizes three peizoceramics fitted with temperature-compensated strain gauges. The scanner includes amplifier circuits for the strain gauges. Electrical connectors to the scanner are through a 20-pin ribbon cable at the rear of the stage. The round sample holder at the top of the stage may be removed and replaced with sample holders with extended features such as a sample clip.

    1” X 1” Precision Stage – Micrometers with .001” resolution are used for generating motion in this X-Y precision stage. The stage has several tapped holes for mounting it onto a platform.

    Documentation Package for TT-AFM – All of the design documents for the TT-AFM are included with this package. This includes the mechanical drawings for stage components and electronic schematics for the EBox. Purchasing these documents requires signature of a license agreement.

 

    Probe Carrier for TT-AFM – A probe carrier holds the probe in the TT-AFM light lever force sensor. The probe carrier includes dither piezo for vibrating mode as well as additional electrical connections.

 

    Z Stage for TT-AFM – High-resolution translation is achieved with this motorized stage. The range of the stage is 1" and the step size is XXX. The stage includes a number of tapped screw holes for mounting.

 

Z Stage for TT-AFM Motion in the Z stage is generated with a low current/low voltage stepper motor. The stage has a range of 1". The stage includes limit switches for all up and all down positions. On the stage's table is a series of tapped holes that are available for securing items to the stage.     Laser for TT-AFM – This laser module is used in the LL-AFM force sensor. It requires a 5 V power source. The wavelength is 650 nm and it has a focal length of 30 mm.

 

Laser for TT-AFM   A diode laser is used in the light lever force sensor of the TT-AFM. The diode wavelength is 650 nm and it outputs 2 miliwatts of power. It requires a 5 volt power supply and has two 18” leads that can be directly inserted into the TT-AFM stage interface board. With regard to safety, the laser is Class II and should not be viewed directly for long time periods without the aid of filtered glasses.     Calibration Reference – A standard reference is required for calibrating an AFM scanner with an optical microscope. This reference includes a pattern that is used for both AFM and optical microscope calibration.

 

Calibration Reference     This reference sample, manufactured by Applied Nanostructures, is used for calibrating both an optical microscope and an AFM. The reference features are nominally 100 nm high and there is a series of line and square patterns.     Vibration Enclosure – The vibration enclosure helps reduce structural and acoustic vibrations that create unwanted noise in AFM images. This enclosure is recommended for making extremely high resolution images.

The TT-AFM Vibration Enclosure helps filter out any remaining unwanted acoustic and structural vibrations. The enclosure is 18 X 18 x 36 inches and weighs 75 pounds. Inside the box, the walls are covered with acoustic foam and the instrument is suspended by four Bungee cords. The stage platform has a space to hold up to five 12” X 12” tiles*.     Environmental Cell – Samples may be scanned in liquids as well as inert gases with the environmental cell. The cell replaces the probe holder in the TT-AFM while scanning.



 

Environmental Cell V1.0 Environmental Cell V1.0 Model: LI - 2011 Download PDF The environmental cell is used for scanning samples in a controlled environment such as a liquid or inert gas. The cell is designed so that the AFM probe and the sample are held in a sealed chamber. Gases or liquids are introduced into the chamber through inlet and outlet ports. In use, the environmental cell replaces the probe holder in the TT-AFM light lever. The environmental cell for the TT-AFM requires the user to have advanced understanding of AFM operation. Operators attempting to use the environmental cell without considerable practical AFM operational knowledge will have limited success. We recommend at least one full week of time for producing the first images with the environmental cell. At the tip of the cell is a glass window that the laser light passes though before and after the light reflects off the cantilever. The body of the cell is made from aluminum with an anodized finish. A seal between the cell top and cell bottom is made with a viton o-ring. At the bottom of the cell, a rubber disk is used to seal the sample holder in place.     15 micron scanner – The 15 micron scanner replaces the 50 micron scanner in the TT-AFM. Extremely high resolution scans are made with the 15 micron scanner.


 

15 Micron Scanner 15 Micron Scanner Model: PS-2011 Price: $3,280 Description The 15 micron scanner is interchangeable with the 50 micron scanner in the TT-AFM. With a small XY and Z range the 15 micron scanner is ideal for measuring nano-structures with dimensions that are less than 50 nm.
