IL-9过去被认为是2型免疫应答的早期炎症因子。然而，近来有证据表明IL-9可能是由一群特定的辅助性T细胞分泌的，这群细胞被称作Th9，可能来源于TGF-β存在下的Th2或直接来源于TGF-β 和 IL-4存在下的幼稚性CD4+T细胞。

IL-9是普通细胞因子受体γ链依赖家族的成员，这个家族的成员还包括IL-2'' IL-4'' IL-7'' IL-15和IL-21。IL-9对于Th2淋巴细胞、B淋巴细胞、肥大细胞、嗜酸性细胞、内脏和呼吸道上皮细胞的多效性提示其与哮喘和其他过敏疾病相关。
